Keeping the neighbours happy

Joy Ride Café keeps working on expanding the selection of foreign beers. Since we opened we've been serving the classic Bolivian lagers as well as some national special beers such as 'Sureña Stout' (try it mixed with 'Sureña Especial'. It's called a 'mulata') and 'Paceña Bock'. And don´t forget to try the exclusive ´Teddybeer´ and ´Wit Bierke´. Both brewed by our own Ted!
From Mexico we have 'Corona' and 'Negra Modelo', from Holland 'Heineken' (of course...) and the German wheat beer 'Schneider Weisse'. Most proud we are though, of our selection of Belgian beers. Joy Ride's still the only place in Bolivia where you can buy them. Currently we serve 'Hoegaarden', 'Leffe Blond', 'Duvel', 'Leffe Brune' and 'Chimay'. And then there are 'Jägermeister' (Schnaps) from Germany and real 'Bols Jenever' from Holland!

Dan Does Seventeen!
(Choplifters of the world unite - The Smiths)

Sucre, November the 20th - Driving around the world on a motorbike and drinking huge amounts of beer seem to be two things that go well together, since the Joy Ride's superchop (pints) drinking record has once again been set by a leatherclad biker, adding up to a astonishing 17 superchops!

Announcing his attempt on a monday, it took ´Manchester Dan´ almost three full days of meditation and sexual reclusion to work up the courage. Supporter's faith started langering and the first cynical remarks were made.

On wednesday night though, Dan pulled himself together, put on the official ´Joyride-Superchop-record T-shirt´ and unleashed his thirst upon the beer stock. Keeping a steady pace he passed the 10-pint point a little before one o´clock at night. Though quite an accomplishment already, some words of doubt on whether or not he was going to make it before three o´clock, could be heard coming from the spectators. Experts on the matter commented that "...breaking drinking records is a matter of intelligence, stamina and sheer willpower. If one of these three is lacking, forget about the attempt! Dan´s increasing problems to stand up straight, might indicate that he actually reached the utter limits of his stamina."

Against all odds, after a quick visit to the loo, Mr. Manchester was back into shape again and he continued his attempt like new. Building up the tension like a professional, he ordered his 17th superchop at only 2.35 am. With the crowd holding its breath, he gulped down the last bit of beer standing between him and victory at 2.59 am.
Unfortunately Dan was unable to celebrate with his fans: he passed out.

It should be noted that Manchester Dan has been spotted the next morning, eating a hangover breakfast and quietly watching a Manchester United match.

Congratulations Dan!

La Virgen del Cerro

The painting of 'La Virgin del Cerro' is one of Bolivia's most famous paintings. It's painted by an anonymus artist from the XVII Century, using oil on canvas. The original is currently on display in 'la Casa de la Moneda' in Potosi.
The painting shows the crowning of the Virgin Maria inserted into the Rich Mountain (Cerro Rico, where the Potosi silver mines are), whose silver wealth brought about the joining of the two cultures in all aspects.

Hand painted, oil on canvas reproductions of this painting in different sizes are for sale in the Joy Ride Café.
